The task

Is it possible to create reliable control features without any rotary knobs, but just as intuitive: Yes it is – and there’s actually no way around it, seeing that the range of features of modern appliances has become increasingly complex and devices are becoming more and more connected, while at the same time requiring safe, intuitive operation. So we took on the challenge of developing a UI design language for the control of two different industrial furnace types – while paying tribute to the brand context and with a variety of user groups in mind.

The solution

Following an in-depth analysis of user groups and usage, we arrived at a solution that allows for quick and easy navigation. As a core element, we combined standard touchscreen interactions with new programming features. The unique visualisation of the programming process makes it easier for users to become acquainted with the device’s more complex functionalities. And as a special added value, the process is illustrated by displaying targeted, context-specific information as needed.

Brand-defining design elements and the design strategy developed form the basis for the visual brand language, which will be used to represent the brand in any future user interfaces of further products.
